FREEDOM 2-DAY TRIP AUGUST 13-15, 2002
By Dennis Evans (SFR Member)!

The first day started out with a bang with some blue fin tuna and then calmed down with some fish on the troll, and albacore and yellowtail out of the kelp paddies. We fished until about 8PM and then had a great Center-Cut Pork chop dinner with mashed potatoes, vegetables, rolls, salad and ice cream with strawberries for dessert. Some die-hards stayed up throughout the night and brought in some giant squid and of course some blue sharks.

Day 2 started out quiet, trolling was slow and we fished a lot of kelp paddies. Yellowtail and blue fin were coming off the paddies. We were getting into some blue fin and yellowtail, however due to some drags not being adjusted correctly, old line and too light of line being used, we lost about 15-20 fish. We had about an hour left when Captain Mike Franks stopped on a paddy that he said no one else had fished yet. We got a few yellowtails and then the blue fin came in. We were picking the blue fin up on anchovies, sardines and yo-yoing blue and white lures. We had about 45 minutes of non-stop fishing picking up about 45 blue fin. Keith Tedrow had the last fish on, he was on that fish for about 30 minutes, we got color and it appears to be about a 70-80 pound blue fin (he was fishing 25# test with a number 2 hook), finally, the fish spit the hook and was gone, leaving Keith very tired and a bit dejected. It was a really nice fish and he fought that fish until both the fish and the fisherman was exhausted, the fish won this fight, but Keith will be back. Captain Mike, then said, that?s it guys we have a long trip back and we headed for home. It was a real nice trip, we all wished we could have gotten into more bites like the last one, but all in all it was a good trip look forward to fishing the Freedom again. Angler Club Members, Dennis Evans from Valencia, Richard Rushlow from Anaheim and Mike Ortiz of Van Nuys.
